Consort 8

Consort 8

Sydney’s unique early music ensemble, Consort 8 encompasses consorts of recorders and violas da gamba, lutes, theorbos, voice and percussion

Consort 8 began as a recorder ensemble of five players. The group has now expanded to include ten musicians – a countertenor, consorts of recorders and violas da gamba, lutes, theorbos and percussion. This is the only group of its kind in Sydney.

Based at the beautifully renovated St Paul’s Anglican Church, Burwood, Consort 8’s repertoire of sacred and secular music is extensive, ranging from 13th century to the present day; including works written by Australian composers.

The wealth of instruments in the consort allows a variety of colours and sonorities, enhancing the performance of the music, some of which has never been performed in Sydney.
